What Is Heavy Merit

One Coach. One Beginner.

Bennett is a purple belt with the medals to back it up. Jeff had never trained a day in his life. Every episode, Bennett teaches him something that actually works, then they test it on the mat. It's a coach coaching and a beginner getting better, on camera.

The Show

What You're Watching

The Lessons

Bennett teaches Jeff one technique at a time, then they roll so you can see whether it holds up. That's the main thread: a coach's eye and a beginner's progress, episode over episode.

The Training

Between lessons, Bennett trains for tournaments against grapplers at his level and better. The honest version of what high-level practice actually looks like.

The Guests

Once in a while, someone with a real story pulls up a chair. Not the main event, just good company when the right person comes around.

The Hosts
Bennett Rawlings and Jeff Wamsley — Heavy Merit

Bennett Rawlings

The Coach · Purple Belt

Twenty-four. BJJ purple belt with the competition record to match: AGF Missouri State silver, FUJI Kansas City bronze, and a stack of submission wins. He trains at his home gym, rolling with anyone trying to get better the only way that works, which is more mat time. He's the reason the technical side holds up. On camera, he isn't performing. He's coaching.

Jeff Wamsley

The Student · Producer

Thirty-nine. Dad. Producer. Never trained a martial art in his life. A year ago he picked up a tennis racket because his kids were outrunning him, then he found a heavy bag, and now he's learning jiu-jitsu on camera with a purple belt for a teacher. His job on the mat is to ask the questions you'd actually ask, and survive the roll.
